Nice guy gets cancer and tries to adapt, along with his girlfriend, friends and family. This is definitely not an unusual premise, it's just mixed with a bit more "Apatow" style humor than most movies of this type. The trick with 50/50 is to satisfyingly manage the balance between humor (much of it pretty dirty) and the seriousness and emotional gravity of exploring our mortality through life-threatening illness. I suppose my only real issue with the movie is that the balance isn't always managed well. There are lengthy gaps that both aren't funny and aren't emotional or touching and that somehow impacts the sense of pacing. That's not to say this makes the movie bad, it does all build up to a very emotional and satisfying conclusion, it's just... there are these gaps... Meh, I should get over it. News
